In the two-semester project, the Master’s students developed an application in which the work processes of an industrial robot and a portal milling machine can be observed in virtual reality as an example. To do this, they prepared the CAD models of the robot and the milling machine and imported them into the 3D engine “UnrealEngine”. The students then developed a connection to both “ABB RobotStudio” and “Siemens NX”, with which movement data is transferred directly from the planning or CAD software to the VR application. With their work, the students have taken the first step towards a platform for researching human-robot collaboration at Westfälische Hochschule. In the long term, this platform should also enable industrial projects for the participatory planning and design of human-robot workplaces.
